Various Artists - Wamono Disco - Nippon Columbia Disco & Boogie Hits 1978-1982
Wamono Disco - Nippon Columbia Disco & Boogie Hits 1978-1982 explores a period when disco culture was booming in Tokyo and across Japan. Following the mid-1970s arrival of locally produced disco records, Japanese labels embraced the style with recordings often driven by highly skilled studio musicians, giving the music a particularly strong live-band feel.
Disco spread beyond clubs into television, advertising and anime. This eight-track selection moves from Godiego's The Birth Of The Odyssey - Monkey Magic to Pink Parachute's Disco Great Tokyo, drawing together disco and boogie released through Nippon Columbia in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
The tracks were selected and compiled by Greg Gouty and Maxime Brottes, with the project inspired by the earlier Disco Great Tokyo - Columbia Disco Fever 1977-1980 compilation selected by T-Groove. All material is licensed from Nippon Columbia Co., Ltd., Japan.
Mastering and lacquer cutting were handled by Jukka Sarapää at Timmion Cutting Lab in Helsinki, with artwork by Nker. The result is a concise vinyl survey of Japanese disco and boogie where studio craft, pop culture and dancefloor music meet.
