Various Artists – Spiritual Jazz 19 - West Coast USA Part 2: 70s & 80s

Spiritual Jazz 19 - West Coast USA Part 2: 70s & 80s continues Jazzman’s examination of the underground jazz that evolved across California and the wider West Coast during the latter part of the twentieth century.

By the 1970s and 1980s, modal, Afro-centric and spiritual jazz had absorbed the effects of counterculture, Black political movements, new spiritual practices and a flourishing independent-label network. This second volume focuses on that later period, highlighting music that developed outside the mainstream while remaining deeply connected to the social and creative environment of the West Coast.

The 2LP gatefold edition includes liner notes, photographs and a download code. With selections from Pharoah Sanders, Buddy Collette, Billy Higgins, PE Hewitt, Rickey Kelly, Ambiance and more, Part 2 offers a rich companion to the first volume and a focused survey of adventurous West Coast jazz.
