Various Artists - Iranian Funk explores the vibrant funk and soul sounds that circulated through Iran during the 1970s, before the country’s revolutionary transformation at the end of the decade. Compiled by Akenat, the album brings together ten tracks from major stars and lesser-known artists, presenting a concise introduction to a period when Tehran’s popular-music scene was absorbing international funk while reshaping it through Persian musical traditions.

The appeal of these recordings lies in that mixture. Familiar ingredients from 1970s funk and soul — syncopated bass, tight drums, electric keyboards, wah-wah guitar and orchestral flourishes — are combined with Persian melodies, vocal styles and rhythmic ideas. The result is not simply Western funk performed in Iran, but a distinctive local language that reflects the cosmopolitan musical culture of the period and the creativity of musicians working across multiple traditions.
