Type O Negative - October Rust (Picture Disc Vinyl)
Type O Negative - October Rust returns as a limited 2LP Picture Disc edition for Rocktober, exclusive to RSD stores. Originally released in 1996, the album is the fourth studio record from the Brooklyn band and one of the releases most closely associated with their signature combination of gothic atmosphere, doom-heavy guitars, dark humour and unexpectedly lush melody.
Led by Peter Steele, Type O Negative had already built a reputation for bleak humour and slow, crushing arrangements, but October Rust pushed the band further toward layered textures and romantic melancholy. The record retains the weight of metal while making greater use of keyboards, harmonies and spacious production, creating a sound that can be both heavy and dreamlike within the same song.
That balance helped make October Rust a landmark in the band's catalogue. It captures the tension that defined Type O Negative at their best: sincere and ironic, bleak and beautiful, theatrical and deeply personal. The album's distinctive mood also made it especially influential within gothic metal and adjacent alternative scenes, where its combination of atmosphere and heaviness continues to resonate.
This Rhino Atlantic reissue is pressed across two 140g Picture Discs and is designated as a Rocktober RSD Stores Exclusive. Scheduled for release on 2 October 2026, it gives one of Type O Negative's most celebrated albums a highly visual collectors' edition while retaining the full 2LP format.
The album is also notable for how confidently it embraces beauty alongside heaviness. Steele's deep vocal delivery, the band's slow tempos and the dense guitar sound are offset by melodic keyboards, layered harmonies and passages that verge on dream-pop atmosphere. That contrast gives the record much of its identity and helps explain why October Rust has remained a gateway album for listeners moving between metal, goth, alternative rock and darker forms of romantic pop.
