The Offline – La grande evasion
Hamburg-based multi-instrumentalist and producer The Offline returns with La grande evasion, his second full-length album and a vivid continuation of the cinematic, hip-hop-leaning world he has been crafting release by release. Rooted in memory, photography and inner travel, the album unfolds as an escape into the unknown – a journey that touches on freedom, identity and the enduring power of storytelling across myths, film and music.
The record opens with the expansive title theme before weaving through a rich palette of textures: the sun-drenched psych-soul of lead single “Boulevard National”, inspired by the multicultural pulse of Marseille; the breezy, Khruangbin-esque warmth of “Nikonos V”, named after the waterproof film camera that inspired the project’s visual identity; and the surreal, breakbeat-laced trip of “Le trip”, featuring soaring saxophone from long-time collaborator Kimo Eiserbeck.
Moments of reflection sit alongside bursts of groove and improvisation. “La belle en lumiere” forms the emotional heart of the album, building from soft Rhodes chords into sweeping horn-led drama, while tracks like “Les aventuriers”, “Les Iles” and “Les miracles de l'ocean” expand the record’s sense of movement and cinematic scale.
An intoxicating blend of woozy psych-soul, West Coast surf, jazz-funk and beat-driven experimentation, La grande evasion further establishes The Offline as one of the most imaginative voices in contemporary instrumental music. Fans of BADBADNOTGOOD, Khruangbin, Tommy Guerrero and library-style storytelling will find plenty to love.
