The Durutti Column - Renascent
Renascent marks the long-awaited return of The Durutti Column with their first new studio album in more than fifteen years. Led by Vini Reilly and produced by Keir Stewart, the record reconnects with the group’s singular guitar language while placing it inside warm ambient washes, piano, subtle beats and carefully judged guest vocals. Released by London Records, it is both a continuation of a remarkable catalogue and a genuine new beginning.
Since emerging from Manchester’s Factory Records scene, The Durutti Column have occupied a space of their own. Reilly’s fragile, fluid guitar playing resisted the harder edges associated with post-punk, drawing instead from classical technique, jazz, minimalism, electronic texture and deeply personal melody. That influence has continued to spread, with contemporary artists across alternative pop, ambient music and experimental rock citing the group as a touchstone.
Renascent opens with “Echoes In The Memory” and moves through the reflective “Your Shadow At Morning,” “Time Present And Time Past” and “Agonistes,” which features Caoilfhionn Rose. “Liars” introduces a sharper rhythmic shape without disturbing the album’s spacious atmosphere. The second side includes “Vapour In A Matchbox,” “Your Shadow At Evening,” “Sargasso Sea,” “Scammer” and the closing “For Friends Everywhere.” Across the ten vinyl tracks, Reilly’s guitar remains the emotional centre, but the surrounding arrangements give it new colours and room to move.
Two vinyl editions are available within this product. The deluxe transparent Bottle Green version uses exclusive alternate artwork and an expanded package with a gatefold sleeve, large-format booklet and printed inner sleeve. The Clear Yellow edition presents the same ten-track vinyl programme in a vivid colour pressing. Both versions underline the visual care that has always accompanied The Durutti Column’s music, with design work connected to long-term collaborators Mark Holt and Hamish Muir of 8vo.
For established followers, Renascent is a significant return from one of Manchester’s most individual groups. For newer listeners drawn by the band’s expanding modern influence, it offers an accessible entry into music that remains contemporary, intimate and otherworldly.
