Following extensive touring around 2023's Tomorrow's Fire, Williams kept moving, allowing travel, instinct and changing surroundings to shape the new material. The album was recorded across two locations: a makeshift studio in rural Wisconsin and Drop of Sun Studios in Asheville, North Carolina. That sense of movement runs through the record, which explores hope, beauty, electric love, departure, endurance and the need to keep going even when the route ahead is uncertain.

Mixed and co-produced by Alex Farrar, known for work with MJ Lenderman and Wednesday, the album features contributions from Dimitri Giannopolous of Horse Jumper of Love, Sofia Jensen of Free Range, Clay Frankel of Twin Peaks and Hazel City, and other collaborators. Songs such as Highway Woman, Reelin, Not Me and Cleveland showcase Williams' sharpened writing style and some of the strongest vocal performances of her career.
