Rubel – Pearl
Mr Bongo presents the first worldwide vinyl issue of Rubel’s much-loved debut album Pearl, making a formative modern Brazilian record widely available after years of growing cult recognition. Self-released on YouTube in 2013, the album quietly developed into a major success in Brazil, with its breakthrough song “Quando Bate Aquela Saudade” and accompanying video attracting more than 85 million views. What began as a deeply personal independent project became the foundation for Rubel’s rise as one of Brazil’s most distinctive contemporary singer-songwriters.
The story of Pearl began while Rubel was studying film in Austin, Texas. Living in a large shared house and immersed in the city’s do-it-yourself music community, he assembled a home studio from rented equipment and recorded the album without commercial expectations. The seven songs preserve the atmosphere of that period: youth, experimentation, friendship and the desire to carry a piece of the experience home. After uploading the finished album, Rubel initially continued pursuing film work in Los Angeles, only to watch the music gradually find a devoted audience in Brazil.
Musically, the album blends MPB, folk, pop and indie with a warmth that feels both intimate and timeless. “O Velho e o Mar” begins delicately with acoustic guitar, banjo and layered vocals before building in intensity as accordion enters the arrangement. The title track has a broad international singer-songwriter quality, while the nearly seven-minute “Quando Bate Aquela Saudade” demonstrates how an unconventional, patient composition can become a genuine popular standard when its emotion connects directly with listeners.
This release captures Rubel at his purest and most personal, placing songwriting, voice and musicianship at the centre. Its unpretentious production and nostalgic atmosphere remain accessible whether or not the listener understands Portuguese, and the album’s reputation has only strengthened as original Brazilian editions became increasingly sought after.
