Os Mutantes - Os Mutantes

Os Mutantes’ self-titled debut is one of the defining records of Brazil’s Tropicália movement, combining psychedelic rock, Brazilian popular music, studio experimentation and irreverent pop songwriting into a sound that remains instantly recognisable.

Originally released in 1968, the album places Rita Lee, Arnaldo Baptista and Sérgio Dias at the centre of a musical collision between traditional Brazilian forms and the radical possibilities of late-1960s rock.

Tracks such as Panis Et Circenses, A Minha Menina and Bat Macumba became key works in the Tropicália canon, while the group’s interpretation of Baby links the album closely to the broader movement around Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and Gal Costa.

The result is both historically important and remarkably fresh: a concise, adventurous album that helped redefine Brazilian popular music and went on to influence generations of psychedelic, alternative and experimental artists.
