Orquesta Akokán – AMÉRICA! is the fourth studio album from the acclaimed big band, expanding the classic mambo language that has defined their work while opening the arrangements to Latin soul, boogaloo, salsa and deeply personal storytelling. Recorded live to tape at Penrose Recorders by Daptone co-founder Gabriel Roth, the album preserves the force and detail of a full ensemble playing together in the room. It is vibrant dance music, but its emotional range reaches well beyond celebration.

Orquesta Akokán remain grounded in Cuban musical traditions, with brass, percussion, piano and bass driving arrangements shaped for movement. On AMÉRICA!, that foundation supports a broader cast of voices and perspectives. New guest singers include Elhajli and Carolina Oliveros of Combo Chimbita, performers capable of carrying the raw intensity associated with figures such as Celia Cruz and La Lupe while directing it toward themes of loss, upheaval, migration and the weight of building a life away from home.

The eight-track sequence moves quickly and purposefully. “NO ME VOY” sets out the album’s bold character before “MAMI QUÉ QUÉ” and “HACE TIEMPO” deepen the rhythmic pull. “APRENDIZAJE” and “ME TIENES SIN CUIDADO” place strong vocal performances at the centre of tightly controlled arrangements, while “GIRASSOL” adds another shade to the record’s international outlook. “NADIE ME TOCA IGUAL” leads into the closing “CHA CHA CHA OOH LA LA”, an irresistible finale that underlines the group’s ability to make classic forms feel immediate.

Roth’s analogue recording approach is central to the sound. The horns arrive with weight, the rhythm section retains its natural push and pull, and the space around the singers allows every change in tone to register. Rather than recreating a polished historical artefact, Orquesta Akokán use the vocabulary of mid-century Cuban dance music as a living form. The result feels precise without becoming rigid and exuberant without overlooking the harder experiences carried in the lyrics.
