Marc Mac - Generation X (Black Vinyl)

Marc Mac – Generation X is an audio documentary in beat-tape form, returning to vinyl as part of the producer’s six-volume Beats & Knowledge series. Marc Mac, widely known through 4hero and Reinforced Records, combines boom-bap production with jazz, soul and historical soundbites to create records that function equally as music, education and archival storytelling.

Generation X focuses its narrative on Black British experience, with particular attention to the social and political atmosphere surrounding the early 1980s. The album’s sequencing moves through place, memory, policing, resistance and community, using broadcasts and spoken testimony as the structural centre of each track. “Summer Of 81’”, “Brixton Yoots”, “New Cross Ghost” and “Operation Swamp” place the listener inside a period of tension and collective action without reducing that history to a simple backdrop.

Marc’s production gives the material momentum and emotional shape. Dusty drums, jazz-derived harmony, dub influence and soulful samples create a mixtape-like flow in which every transition matters. “Dub Dargs” and “Wish I Knew” open the palette, while the paired “Day Of Action (Intro)” and “Day Of Action” provide a central turning point. Later tracks including “Black Experience”, “SUS It Out” and “Established Order” make the record’s themes increasingly direct before “Learn To Live” closes the sequence.

The wider series began in 2006 with It’s Right to Be Civil and developed into a substantial living archive across six albums. Generation X is one of its most specifically located chapters, using production and testimony to preserve voices that conventional historical summaries can flatten or overlook. This edition is pressed on 180g black vinyl, housed in a weighted card cover and supplied shrink-wrapped. It is essential listening for fans of conscious hip-hop, jazz-informed beatmaking, sample culture and independent Black British history.

The full twenty-one-track sequence is preserved, giving the documentary flow an uninterrupted physical format and encouraging focused listening from the opening statement through the final reflection.
