Mansun – Attack Of The Grey Lantern returns in a new black-vinyl edition half-speed mastered at Abbey Road. Originally released in February 1997, the album entered the UK chart at number one and quickly became one of the most distinctive British guitar records of its era. Rather than following a straightforward Britpop template, Mansun built an elaborate sequence of recurring characters, dark humour, glam-rock drama and ambitious arrangements around Paul Draper’s sharp melodic writing.

The album opens with the cinematic sweep of “The Chad Who Loved Me” before moving through the shifting moods of “Mansun’s Only Love Song” and “Taxloss”. “Wide Open Space” remains the group’s defining anthem, balancing a vast chorus with an undercurrent of unease, while “She Makes My Nose Bleed” turns romantic obsession into immediate, punchy alternative rock. Elsewhere, “Stripper Vicar”, “You, Who Do You Hate?” and “Disgusting” populate the fictional world of the Grey Lantern with compromised, exaggerated and often grotesque characters.

Draper described the record as a partially realised concept album in which the Grey Lantern confronts the inhabitants of a morally corrupt village. Even where the narrative loosens, the sequencing gives the album a strong sense of movement. “Egg Shaped Fred” adds another memorable character before “Dark Mavis” brings the story to its dramatic conclusion. The result is playful and grandiose, but also carefully constructed, with guitar hooks, orchestral colour and studio detail supporting the songs rather than overwhelming them.

This 2026 Kscope edition revisits the album through a half-speed mastering process at Abbey Road, designed to reveal greater clarity and definition from the recording.
