Luke Alessi – Yes Empress EP (12" Vinyl)
Yes Empress is an EP that reveals much more than it first lets on. On first listen it’s a dance floor-destroying house record, but subsequent spins reveal deep collabs, intricate world percussion, and instant-replay level ‘gun finger’ moments.
Title track ‘Yes Empress’ is a gut-punch to the dancing shoes. It’s all snare rolls, sizzling synths, and funked-out bass lines. A soulful breakdown with angelic female vocals perfectly offsets the commanding male vocal we get in the drop.
‘Phonk’ is a tribal-leaning, tech house roller, perfect for after hours dance floors. ‘Guacamole’ takes the percussive tribal sound even deeper with what I think is a James Brown ‘The Boss’ sample (email in with your disputes!), and an MC vocal.
To close the record ‘Overtime Ft. Kamohelo’ is deep house slammer, with effective dubbed-out vocal tones you may recognise from Kamohelo’s work with his group ‘Off The Meds’.
