Kristin Hersh - Sugar On Blackstone (Light Blue Vinyl)

Sugar On Blackstone is a darker but delicately rendered solo album from Kristin Hersh, the founder and creative force behind Throwing Muses. The record turns toward memory, grief, home and displacement, examining the small moments of childhood that continue to echo through adult life and the ways certain sounds, streets and people can suddenly return with vivid emotional force.

Recorded at Stable Sound Studios, Hersh is joined by longtime collaborators Rob Ahlers of 50FOOTWAVE on drums and cellist Pete Harvey of Throwing Muses. Their presence gives the album a stark but warm physicality: arrangements remain spacious enough for Hersh's voice and guitar to feel exposed, yet there is always a sense of tension and accumulated weight underneath the quieter surfaces.

Providence, Rhode Island runs through the record as both location and emotional anchor. References to Blackstone Boulevard and Hope Street connect the album to Hersh's childhood, while the songs revisit familiar places transformed by time, loss and survival. Written in the aftermath of personal tragedy and against a backdrop of constant travel, wildfires and restless movement across America, Sugar On Blackstone never treats memory as simple nostalgia. Instead, home becomes something unstable: a source of comfort, grief, endurance and identity all at once.

The album balances vulnerability with force and finds tenderness inside its darker themes. This vinyl edition is pressed on Light Blue vinyl and contains eleven tracks, from Dark Eyed Junco and Moths through '72 Stingray and the closing Samson.
