Kourosh Yaghmaei - Back From The Brink (Black Vinyl)
Kourosh Yaghmaei's Back From The Brink is an essential anthology of pre-Revolution Iranian psychedelic rock, collecting twenty-one recordings made between 1972 and 1979. Presented as a deluxe triple LP, this officially licensed edition restores the work of an artist widely regarded as a foundational figure in Iran's modern rock history. The collection draws directly from Kourosh's original master tapes, preserving the vivid blend of fuzz guitar, melodic pop, progressive arrangements and Iranian musical traditions that made his recordings so distinctive.
Working with his brothers Kamran and Kambiz, Kourosh helped reshape Tehran's musical landscape during the late 1960s and 1970s. Inspired by imported records from groups including The Ventures, The Kinks and The Doors, they combined Western garage rock and psychedelia with local melodic forms. As Kourosh developed, his songwriting absorbed more sophisticated folk, funk and progressive influences, producing music that remains difficult to categorise and immediately recognisable. Songs such as Gole Yakh, Hajme Khali and Leila reveal a musician with a gift for memorable hooks, expressive guitar work and richly atmospheric production.
Back From The Brink also documents extraordinary perseverance. Following the Iranian Revolution, record companies were destroyed, musicians were harassed and much of the country's pre-Revolution popular culture was suppressed. While many contemporaries left Iran, Kourosh remained in Tehran and protected his tapes and personal archive, despite facing lengthy restrictions on recording and performance. This collection allows that history to be heard through music that survived against considerable odds.
The three black vinyl records are housed in a deluxe triple gatefold package and accompanied by a full-colour book featuring rare photographs, period ephemera and Kourosh's own recollections. Both a powerful historical document and a deeply enjoyable psychedelic rock collection, Back From The Brink belongs in any serious collection of global rock, reissue archaeology and boundary-crossing music.
