Karl Hector And The Malcouns - Yolek (Black Vinyl)

Yolek is the fourth studio album from Karl Hector And The Malcouns, released by Now-Again Records on black vinyl. Led by JJ Whitefield and Zdenko Curulija, the Munich-based project continues its exploration of psychedelic funk, Krautrock, jazz and globally influenced experimental music. The album follows the path established by Sahara Swing, Unstraight Ahead and Non Ex Orbis, but pushes further into the cosmic German underground of the 1970s.

The record takes inspiration from the adventurous spirit of groups such as Embryo, Agitation Free, Amon Düül and Popol Vuh. Rather than simply recreating vintage sounds, Whitefield and Curulija use that musical vocabulary as a starting point for concise, rhythm-focused compositions. Analogue keyboards, guitar, flute, percussion and tightly controlled studio effects move between beat-heavy funk, drifting psychedelia and compact progressive-rock structures.

“Go Caravan!” provides a brief invitation before “Space Race” launches into the album's faster-moving kosmische pulse. “Mellow Skyfall” and “Blurry Time” introduce more spacious textures, leading into the title track's hypnotic groove. “The Unseen Road”, “Zen///topia” and “Love Is The Key” continue the journey through shifting rhythmic patterns and warm, exploratory instrumentation.

The second half includes the playful “Aiaiai”, the desert-toned “Noon At The Oasis” and the compact psychedelic funk of “Exot”. “Crimson Dune” expands the album's cinematic atmosphere before “Sahara Sepp” closes the sequence with another tightly arranged instrumental passage. Across all thirteen tracks, the musicians favour clarity and momentum over extended improvisation, making Yolek both adventurous and immediately accessible.

The title represents an innocent, unfiltered approach to composition: music created with the curiosity of hearing sounds as though for the first time. That idea gives the album a lightness even when the arrangements become complex.

Presented as a single black-vinyl LP in a standard jacket, Yolek is recommended for listeners drawn to Krautrock, psychedelic funk, library music, Afro-rock and the modern instrumental worlds surrounding artists such as Khruangbin.
