Kali Malone - Burning Song
Burning Song is composer and organist Kali Malone’s first new album since 2024’s All Life Long, marking a shift toward a more intuitive and direct compositional process. The album was recorded at the historic Thomaskirche in Leipzig, where J.S. Bach served as cantor for the final 27 years of his life.
Malone is the first musician to perform contemporary works on the church’s Bach Organ, an instrument completed in 2000 with tuning and temperament systems based on Baroque-era practice. She is joined by Lucy Railton on cello and Stephen O’Malley on bowed acoustic guitar, continuing the deep-listening collaboration developed through Does Spring Hide Its Joy.
Across seven slowly unfolding pieces, organ, cello and bowed guitar move together through sustained chords and shifting harmonic colour, creating music that can feel ambiguous, radiant and intensely physical.
