Five years after Demon Days, Gorillaz returned in 2010 with Plastic Beach, an ambitious third studio album built around an extraordinary cast of collaborators. The sixteen-track record features contributions from Bashy, Bobby Womack, De La Soul, Gruff Rhys, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Kano, Little Dragon, Lou Reed, Mark E Smith, Mick Jones, Mos Def, The National Orchestra For Arabic Music, Paul Simonon, Sinfonia ViVA and Snoop Dogg.
Musically, the album pushed Damon Albarn's genre-crossing approach into another vivid setting, with singles including “Stylo”, “Superfast Jellyfish” and “On Melancholy Hill”. Its musical world was matched by an elaborate fictional location: Plastic Beach HQ, a secret floating island in the South Pacific assembled from the detritus, debris and washed-up remnants of humanity. The setting gave 2D, Murdoc Niccals, Russel Hobbs and Noodle another distinctive chapter in the visual mythology created around Gorillaz.
