fluXus - Ghost Signs (Blue Vinyl)

Ghost Signs is the first main-label Castles In Space release from fluXus, the Cornwall-based electronic project of Nigel Rushbrook. Following two albums made for the Castles In Space Subscription Library, Rushbrook expands his atmospheric approach here into a darker, more haunted set of electronic soundscapes built from vintage analogue and virtual synthesisers, old-school effects and Berlin School-style sequencing.

Rushbrook describes his music as emotion first rather than technology first. Sequences and sounds may be carefully constructed, but they are ultimately played from the heart on an 88-note keyboard. That distinction is important to Ghost Signs: its sense of “space” is less about science fiction than emotional distance, memory and the traces people leave behind. The album’s retro-futurist surfaces are continually interrupted by human feeling.

The five tracks move through specific places and private associations. Cannon Street wanders through the City of London and the layered remains of its history. The title track considers the faded advertisements and promises still visible in old brickwork. Outremer imagines a desert journey inspired by Lawrence Durrell’s Monsieur, while Ancient Lights develops a long-standing sequence that had continued to haunt its creator. SYS826 takes its name from a mysterious computer command remembered for causing chaos and confusion.

Pressed on blue vinyl, Ghost Signs is nostalgic space music with a distinctly personal centre: cosmic ambience reflected back as emotional space. It will appeal to listeners of classic electronic sequencing, ambient music and contemporary artists who use analogue synthesis not as retro decoration but as a way of exploring memory, place and atmosphere.
