Dur Dur Band - Dur-Dur Volume 3 & 4 (1988–1989)
Dur Dur Band - Dur-Dur Volume 3 & 4 (1988–1989) brings together two key late-1980s recordings from one of Mogadishu's most important groups, presented by Analog Africa as a 140g double LP in a gatefold sleeve with photographs and extensive liner notes.
During the 1980s, Mogadishu supported one of East Africa's most vibrant music scenes, where Somali melodic traditions met funk, disco, reggae, soul and jazz. Dur Dur Band sat at the centre of that culture. Founded by drummer Adan Handal and his childhood friend Isse Dahir Qassim, the group became the house band at the legendary Jubba Hotel by 1984, developing an explosive live sound that was both deeply local and strikingly modern.
While the band's first two cassette volumes circulated widely across Somalia, Volumes 3 and 4 captured Dur Dur Band at a creative peak. Recorded amid personal tragedy and a growing national crisis, these sessions document a group continuing to push forward. Following the departure of singer Shimaali Ahmed Shimaali and the death of founding bandleader Isse Dahir Qassim, Adan Handal guided the band into new territory.
Volume 4 in particular explores more adventurous production, combining electronic percussion, unusual drum textures and reggae-inspired grooves with the unmistakable character of Somali music. Across the two volumes, the band moves fluidly between dancefloor funk, disco, soul and regional forms, preserving a vivid picture of a musical culture that would soon be scattered by war and displacement.
This Analog Africa edition collects 17 tracks across two LPs and comes in a gatefold cover filled with archival images and liner notes. It is an essential document of 1980s Somali music and of Dur Dur Band's continuing influence far beyond Mogadishu.
