Dinosaur Jr. - There Near
Dinosaur Jr. return with There Near, their sixth studio album since the band’s celebrated rebirth and another powerful chapter in the story of one of alternative rock’s most influential guitar groups.
Recorded in focused bursts at Bisquiteen Studio in Amherst, the album is built around the core trio of J Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murph, with additional piano and organ from Ken Mauri. The result is unmistakably Dinosaur Jr.: loose, melodic vocals, huge distorted guitars and a rhythm section that gives the songs a physical, live-wire energy.
Across the record, J Mascis leans into an especially raw guitar tone, helped by a vintage Mesa Boogie MK 1 amplifier similar to the one used around the time of the band’s earliest recordings. That sense of history sits alongside songs that still feel immediate and alive. Lou Barlow contributes two tracks, “Blowin’ Up” and “No One’s Ready”, while songs such as “Put It Down” balance softer melodic moments with the explosive guitar crescendos the band have made their own.
There Near arrives on 28 August 2026 via Jagjaguwar and continues the band’s long run of acclaimed work. For fans of US indie rock, alternative guitar music and the lineage that runs through Sonic Youth, The Breeders and beyond, this is a major new release from a band whose sound remains instantly recognisable decades into their career.
