Deftones’ self-titled fourth album, originally released in 2003, marked another important step in the band’s evolution beyond the boundaries of alternative metal.

Heavy, atmospheric and often disorienting, the album builds on the textures of White Pony while pushing further into dreamlike ambience, crushing guitar tones and emotionally charged songwriting. Chino Moreno’s vocals move between whisper, melody and full-throated intensity.

Tracks such as Minerva, Hexagram and Bloody Cape show the band balancing aggression with a much wider sonic palette, while the quieter passages lean into shoegaze-like textures and spacious arrangements.

Over time, Deftones has become a key catalogue title in the band’s discography and a bridge between their heavier roots and the more atmospheric direction they would continue to explore.
