Bobby Boyd - Bobby Boyd

Bobby Boyd's self-titled album captures the work of a vocalist, saxophonist, composer and arranger whose career moved between American R&B, funk and the international soul underground. Boyd began releasing records in the mid-1960s before forming the Bobby Boyd Congress and relocating to Paris in 1970.

After returning to New York, Boyd was introduced to George Benson through Benson's manager Jimmy Boyd. The connection developed into a lasting mentorship, with Benson producing tracks that were issued in 1976 as Bobby Boyd on Tiger Lily.

The original album received little promotion and appeared in a very small pressing, leaving the music in obscurity despite Boyd's connections with musicians including Ralph MacDonald, Anthony Jackson, Steve Ferrone and Earl Klugh. Athens Of The North has subsequently worked to preserve and reintroduce his catalogue.

This 2023 remastered vinyl edition makes the rare self-titled set available again, offering a strong piece of 1970s soul and funk history for rare-groove collectors and listeners exploring overlooked independent recordings.
