Bauhaus – Burning From The Inside

Bauhaus’ Burning From The Inside is presented here on black vinyl through Beggars Banquet. First released in 1983, the album was the final studio record from the band’s original era and remains one of the most varied entries in their catalogue. Although Bauhaus are routinely described as founders of gothic rock, this record demonstrates how much broader their musical vocabulary had become, moving between stark post-punk, theatrical art rock, dub-informed atmosphere and extended experimental pieces.

“She’s in Parties” opens the album with one of the group’s defining singles, combining a controlled rhythmic pulse with Peter Murphy’s dramatic vocal and Daniel Ash’s distinctive guitar textures. “Antonin Artaud” follows with a more abrasive attack, while the brief “Wasp” acts as an unsettling transition into the acoustic-led “King Volcano”. “Who Killed Mr. Moonlight?” closes the first side in a mood of piano-driven melancholy, showing the band’s ability to create tension without relying on volume.

The second side broadens the palette further. “Slice of Life” and “Honeymoon Croon” bring sharper pop structures into the record, while “Kingdom’s Coming” offers a compact moment of reflection. The centrepiece is the nine-minute title track, a slow and immersive performance that allows bass, percussion, guitar and voice to stretch into a dark, spacious arrangement. “Hope” then provides a concise and unexpectedly gentle conclusion.

Recorded during a period when Peter Murphy was unavailable for part of the sessions, Burning From The Inside also gave Daniel Ash and David J a greater vocal and compositional presence. That unusual creative situation contributes to the album’s fragmented but compelling character. This edition is ideal for established Bauhaus collectors and for listeners interested in the point where post-punk’s early austerity opened into the wider alternative music of the 1980s.

The result is a record that feels both like a farewell to the original band and a bridge toward the projects its members would pursue afterward.
