Arcade Fire – Neon Bible
Arcade Fire’s Neon Bible returns on black double vinyl, presenting the Montreal group’s acclaimed second album in a spacious gatefold format with an etched fourth side. Originally issued in 2007, the record followed the breakthrough success of Funeral and expanded the band’s sound into something darker, grander and more cinematic. Church organ, massed strings, brass, hurdy-gurdy and layers of percussion frame songs that examine faith, authority, fear, technology and modern public life.
The album opens with the ominous pulse of “Black Mirror” before moving into the urgent, driving “Keep the Car Running”. The compact title track offers a hushed contrast, while “Intervention” pairs Win Butler’s forceful vocal with monumental pipe organ. Across the record, Arcade Fire balance intimate writing with arrangements built for scale. “Black Wave / Bad Vibrations” shifts dramatically between Régine Chassagne and Butler, “Ocean of Noise” unfolds with a slow-burning orchestral sweep, and “The Well and the Lighthouse” turns a familiar fable into a tense, propulsive performance.
The second half contains several of the group’s most enduring songs. “Windowsill” builds from restraint into defiance, the reworked “No Cars Go” becomes a soaring full-band anthem, and closing track “My Body Is a Cage” sets a vulnerable vocal against an imposing organ-led crescendo. The sequencing gives the album the feeling of a complete statement rather than a collection of singles, rewarding full-length listening from the first side through to the etched final surface.
This 2017 Sony pressing is a strong choice for listeners exploring Arcade Fire beyond Funeral, as well as collectors replacing an earlier copy. Pressed across two black vinyl records, Neon Bible captures the band at a pivotal point: ambitious enough to reach for arena-sized drama, yet still rooted in the communal energy and emotional directness that defined their earliest work.
Its combination of spiritual unease, political tension and sweeping ensemble playing has helped the album retain a distinctive place in twenty-first-century indie rock.
