Adrian Younge – Afro-Disco Makossa is a dancefloor-focused meeting point between Afrobeat, Ghanaian highlife, funk and American disco, created with the depth of understanding that has made Younge one of the most distinctive producers working in contemporary soul and jazz. Released through Linear Labs, the album asks an imaginative question: what might a Ghanaian producer in 1976 have made when attempting an American disco record for listeners at home?

The answer is a compact, richly arranged set built around live instrumentation, warm analogue texture and tightly locked rhythm. Younge approaches Afrobeat from experience rather than distance. Through Jazz Is Dead, he has worked directly with foundational and influential musicians including Tony Allen and Ebo Taylor, collaborations that helped shape his understanding of African rhythmic traditions, highlife phrasing and the relationship between groove and arrangement. On Afro-Disco Makossa, that vocabulary is redirected toward the club.

Across six tracks, driving percussion, elastic bass, bright horns and cinematic keyboards combine in music designed for DJs while retaining the detailed musicianship associated with Younge’s catalogue. “Feel The High Life” establishes the celebratory atmosphere, while “Shake Down,” “Number One” and “Every Body” push the record deeper into a blend of disco propulsion and Afrobeat repetition. “Fire In The Disco” and the title track complete a concise album that feels equally suited to a busy dancefloor, a home listening session or a carefully selected global-groove set.
