Spiritual Jazz 19 - West Coast USA Part 1: 50s & 60s is Jazzman’s exploration of the underground jazz currents that developed across California and surrounding states during the post-war period.

While the West Coast is often associated with the cool-jazz boom of the 1950s, modal, Afro-centric and spiritual approaches were flourishing alongside it. This collection looks beyond the familiar narrative, tracing music shaped by Los Angeles’ rich jazz culture, changing social movements and the independent labels that gave musicians space to experiment.

The 2LP set is housed in a gatefold sleeve with liner notes, photographs and a download code. Featuring artists including Chico Hamilton Quintet, Les McCann, Curtis Amy, Harold Land and Charles Lloyd, Part 1 provides a deep survey of the foundations from which later West Coast spiritual jazz would grow.
