Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden
Originally released in 1988, Spirit Of Eden marked a radical transformation for Talk Talk. Moving away from the polished synth-pop associated with their earlier records, Mark Hollis and the band created a spacious, atmospheric work built from extended studio improvisation, acoustic instrumentation, silence and painstaking editing.
The result is a deeply immersive album in which elements of jazz, ambient music, art rock, classical composition and blues emerge gradually rather than following conventional pop structures. Its influence has grown enormously over the decades, particularly on the development of post-rock and more experimental forms of guitar music.
This 2026 vinyl reissue presents Spirit Of Eden as a half-speed remaster, cut by Matt Colton at Metropolis and overseen by Talk Talk drummer Lee Harris alongside Mark Hollis’ son Charlie. It is a particularly fitting presentation of an album whose detail, dynamics and atmosphere reward close listening.
