Agnes Obel - The Meaning Of Flowers
Agnes Obel - The Meaning Of Flowers marks the return of the Danish singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer with her first new album since Myopia in 2020. Written, arranged, recorded and produced entirely by Obel in her Berlin studio, the album is presented as a self-contained creative statement, with the same careful control over composition, performance and atmosphere that has defined her catalogue. Across 12 tracks, Obel moves through an intimate, atmospheric sound world while opening the music to a broad range of ideas and influences.
The album grew out of a period of major personal change following the birth of Obel's first child. Its themes centre on new beginnings, connection and metamorphosis, and on the ways that new life can alter the body, the mind and a person's relationship with the surrounding world. Rather than treating those ideas as a single narrative, The Meaning Of Flowers uses them as a starting point for a wider reflection on transformation. The result is described by the label as genre-spanning, but it remains grounded in Obel's distinctive approach to arrangement and mood.
Obel also draws inspiration from an unusually wide field of cultural references. These include the poetry of Enheduanna, regarded as the earliest known named author, alongside the philosophical ideas of Hannah Arendt and Emanuele Coccia. Musical memories of the Danish pop scene of the 1980s and 1990s feed into the record as well, adding another layer to an album concerned with memory, change and the way different experiences can reshape perspective.
This vinyl release is available in two editions: the standard black LP and an Indies/HMV coloured-vinyl pressing. Both editions contain the same 12-track album and arrive through Deutsche Grammophon / Fontana. For listeners who have followed Obel's work from her earlier records through Myopia, The Meaning Of Flowers represents a new chapter shaped by both personal experience and a deliberately expansive set of artistic references.
