Independent labels including Tabansi and Phonodisk helped support artists and widen creative opportunities, while female performers gained greater visibility within the country’s rapidly changing musical landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe compilation draws together a broad cross-section of Nigerian styles. Highlife is represented by figures including Victor Uwaifo, Nico Mbarga and Paulson Kalu, whose “Akugbue Nwa Ewu” is highlighted by compiler Duncan Brooker as a personal favourite. Prince David Bull’s “Soko Soko” provides a link between generations, later echoed in Starboy’s Afrobeats hit “Soco”, while Segun Adewale contributes a driving juju performance. Lekan Animashaun, the longtime Africa 70 bandleader, appears with the late-era Afrobeat track “Se Rere”, produced in collaboration with Fela Kuti.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eNigeria 80\u003c\/em\u003e also documents less easily categorised sounds from the period. I.C. Rock’s “Advice \/ Oge Chi Kanma” brings a proto-hip-hop edge, while Evi-Edna Ogholi’s self-produced “The World” explores reggae. The vinyl sequence closes with “Apama” by Ibealaoke Chukwukeziri and his Anaedeonu Band, built around hypnotic vocals and percussion. All of the tracks on the compilation are described by Strut as being reissued here for the first time, making the set as much an archival project as a survey of the decade.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis standard vinyl edition is pressed on black double vinyl and housed in a gatefold sleeve. The compilation was assembled by Duncan Brooker, with audio restoration by See Why Audio and mastering by The Carvery.
